Long ago, in a devastating war known to history as the Imperial Conflict, the holy Numina fought by proxy with divinely empowered beings: the Chimera. When the fighting ended, the pantheon of Numina had been winnowed down to the Mother of Thousands alone. Centuries have passed. Emperor Cennbis, though seldom seen, is known to still sit the Modocian throne after all this time, succoured by the patronage of the Mother of Thousands who is still the sole Numen worshipped by the surviving Houses and Orders of humanity. Yet this eternal state of order cannot last: a divine survivor stirs. Her acolyte has a debt that must be paid, and to him no price is too high to secure her divine patronage. Events throw him in with strange companions; a student of an Overseer with much to prove, whose place as her teacher's potential apprentice comes to hinge upon bringing back an extraordinary prize; a pious mechanic, ignorant and blessed, far from his humble home and in for an adventure beyond his wildest imaginations, whose horizons are about to widen far further than he would ever have dreamed... Nothing lasts forever. From the holy pantheon of one Numen only that seemed destined to remain unchanged forever, to our three travellers who thought they knew the shapes of their own lives already, to uneasy alliances always destined to be temporary... on every front the ground shakes and foundations tremble. The Pacts is the first in a sci-fi fantasy series intended as an exciting adventure in space, with dramatic action and sweeping narrative.
